Understanding Cashless Hospital Networks in India
A cashless hospital network is the list of hospitals where your health insurance company has a direct tie-up for cashless claim settlement. When you are admitted to a network hospital, the insurer settles the bill directly with the hospital, eliminating the need for you to pay upfront and seek reimbursement later.
India's health insurance landscape includes over 30 insurers, each maintaining their own network of empanelled hospitals. The largest networks, such as those of Star Health and HDFC ERGO, cover 13,000-14,000 hospitals across the country. However, the quality and depth of these networks vary significantly by city and region.
Why NABH Accreditation Matters
The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) is India's premier healthcare quality certification body, operating under the Quality Council of India. NABH accreditation evaluates hospitals on over 600 parameters covering patient safety, clinical outcomes, infrastructure, and governance.
Choosing an NABH-accredited hospital ensures standardised clinical protocols, trained nursing staff, and systematic quality checks. Many health insurance companies offer enhanced benefits or reduced co-payments when policyholders choose NABH-accredited facilities.
Tips for Using Cashless Hospitals
- Always verify your hospital's current empanelment status with your insurer before a planned admission. Hospitals can be added or removed from networks without notice.
- Carry your health insurance card and policy number to the hospital. Most cashless requests require these at the time of admission.
- Pre-authorisation for planned surgeries should be initiated 48-72 hours before the procedure to avoid delays.
- Be aware of room rent sub-limits in your policy. Choosing a room category above your eligible limit triggers proportionate deductions on the entire bill.
- For emergency admissions, cashless requests can be submitted within 24 hours of hospitalisation at most network hospitals.
