The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India has officially launched Bima Sugam, a comprehensive digital platform that consolidates all insurance-related services under one roof. Described as the "UPI moment for insurance," Bima Sugam allows consumers to compare policies across insurers, purchase insurance, file and track claims, and even port their policies between companies, all from a single interface.
Key Features of Bima Sugam
The platform offers four core functionalities. First, a policy comparison engine that displays standardised quotes from all IRDAI-registered insurers for health, life, motor, and general insurance products. Unlike aggregator websites that earn commissions and may show biased rankings, Bima Sugam presents results in a neutral format with IRDAI-mandated disclosure of all charges and exclusions.
Second, a claims management module that enables digital claim filing with real-time status tracking. Policyholders can upload documents, communicate with insurers, and escalate grievances directly through the platform. Third, a policy portability feature that allows health insurance customers to switch insurers without losing accumulated waiting period credits. Fourth, a unified insurance repository that stores all your policies in a single digital locker, eliminating the risk of losing physical documents.
Impact on Insurance Distribution
The platform is expected to significantly disrupt the current insurance distribution model. Insurance agents and web aggregators, who currently earn 15-40% commissions on life insurance and 10-15% on health insurance, will face competitive pressure as consumers gain direct access to policies at potentially lower costs. IRDAI has hinted at introducing commission-free direct purchase options on Bima Sugam.
For consumers, the most immediate benefit is transparency. The standardised comparison format makes it easier to evaluate policies on actual coverage, exclusions, and claim settlement performance rather than being influenced by aggressive sales pitches. Bima Sugam also integrates IRDAI's complaints database, allowing consumers to check an insurer's grievance resolution track record before purchasing.
What Consumers Should Do
Register on Bima Sugam using your Aadhaar-linked mobile number. Link your existing policies by providing policy numbers and KYC verification. Once linked, all your insurance policies are accessible in one place, and you can set up renewal reminders, file claims, and compare options for new purchases. While the platform is still rolling out features incrementally, the core comparison and purchase modules are fully operational for health and term life insurance.
